Phone Forum To Offer Support To Caregivers

By Shelley Grieshop

Kathleen Montague lifts two small cake pans from the oven as the smell of chocolate fills her modest kitchen. It's Wednesday, her day to bake cakes, she said.

"Every day I do something different to help Philip remember what day it is," she said, with a look of exhaustion on her face. "It doesn't seem to be helping much anymore, but I still do it."

Philip, her husband, was initially diagnosed with dementia, a disease associated with memory loss. But now, at 68, he has "full-blown" Alzheimer's disease, Kathleen said…

Toys Can Give Solace To Alzheimer's Patients

By Rebecca Rosenberg, Columbia News Service

Fanny wandered the halls of Hearthstone Alzheimer Care nursing home in New York, wearing pajama bottoms and a sweat shirt with a crocheted heart on the front. She clutched in her arms an infant-size doll in a pink jumpsuit.

At first Fanny, in her 80s, smiled broadly, her large blue eyes gazing intently at her surroundings as though she were seeing everything for the first time. Then she walked up to the Hearthstone director, Cindy Suna, tickled her chin and giggled, "Uga, guga, guga, gu." A bit later in the afternoon, Fanny switched from giddy to confused…

Abnormal Heart Rhythm Linked to Alzheimer's

By Amanda Gardner
HealthDay Reporter

People with atrial fibrillation, a form of abnormal heart rhythm, are more likely than others to develop dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, a new study finds.

The presence of atrial fibrillation also predicted higher death rates in dementia patients, especially among younger patients in the group studied, meaning under the age of 70.

"This leaves us with the finding that atrial fibrillation, independent of everything else, is a risk factor [for dementia]," said Dr. Gary Kennedy, director of geriatric psychiatry at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. "This is adding one more brick in the road toward understanding that cardiovascular disease is a major risk factor for dementia…”

Needs of Alzheimer Population Addressed
In Healthcare Reform Legislation

Several provisions in the final measure of the Healthcare Bill will deliver substantial benefits to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias and to their caregivers.

Most of the Alzheimer population has one or more other serious medical condition. Coordinated care is critical because so many with Alzheimer’s are also managing multiple chronic conditions, like coronary heart disease or diabetes. Cognitive impairment greatly complicates the management of these other conditions, resulting in more hospitalizations, longer hospital stays, and higher costs than for those with these same conditions but not Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, Medicare costs are three times higher than for those without Alzheimer's disease, while Medicaid costs are nine times higher…

A Little Black Box to Jog Failing Memory

On a cold, wet afternoon not long ago, Aron Reznick sat in the lounge of a home for the elderly here, his silver hair neatly combed, his memory a fog. Window On Alzheimer’s Disease

A team of scientists from Cambridge and Sweden have discovered a molecule that can prevent a toxic protein involved Alzheimer’s disease from building up in the brain. They found that in test tube studies the molecule not only prevents the protein from forming clumps but can also reverse this process. Then, using fruit flies with Alzheimer’s disease, they showed that the same molecule effectively “cures” the insects of the disease…

Pfizer, Medivation’s Drug
Fails in Alzheimer’s Study

By Michelle Fay Cortez

Pfizer Inc. and Medivation Inc. said their experimental Dimebon drug for Alzheimer’s disease failed to benefit patients in an advanced study, sending Medivation shares plunging.

The results of the 600-person trial counter an earlier study in Russia that found improvement in patients getting Dimebon. Medivation, which has no marketed products, dropped 67 percent in Nasdaq trading. Development of the drug may be halted, said Raghuram Selvaraju, head of health-care research at Hapoalim Securities USA Inc., in New York…

When Do Memory Lapses,
Common With Age, Signal A Problem?

By Rachel Saslow
The Washington Post

Where did I park my car?

What is that lady's name?

Where are my glasses?

Some call these "senior moments" or "tip-of-the-tongue" experiences. They're mundane for many elderly (and not-so-elderly) adults, but when do they become something more serious? How does one know when it's time to get screened for a memory disorder?

"The reason it's becoming such an acute concern for everybody is that baby boomers are starting to get into the higher-risk age group, but the bigger driver for this is the baby boomers' parents," says James Lah, an Emory University neurologist, who is 48 and has parents ages 73 and 81. "That age bracket is very high risk, and seeing it in our parents makes you acutely aware and afraid of that prospect." …

Apathy a Common Problem in Alzheimer’s

Most people think of memory loss when they think of Alzheimer’s. But the disease can cause a wide range of behavioral and personality changes as well. One of the most common is apathy, or loss of motivation, and the condition seems to have a biological basis. Using brain scans, researchers in Sweden report that changes in the brain’s white matter are a common feature in apathetic patients who have Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia…
