Lets You Plan Ahead

This article is part of an educational series produced by the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

Earlier parts of this series have looked at the causes and symptoms of dementia. This article looks at the importance of early diagnosis and critical planning steps that will help a person with dementia and his or her family maintain quality of life. Emotional Roller Coaster

As Alzheimer's disease (AD) progresses, the person with AD may lose their ability to understand why they feel a certain way. Additionally, when short-term memory loss becomes immediate, the patient won't recall what triggered the anger, fear, or sadness they feel. The patient becomes more confused because he doesn't know why he is upset, and worse, he may not know how to express what he feels…

How to Deal with Long-Distance Issues

You get the call at work from your husband. Your mother-in-law has fallen at home, broken her hip, and is on her way to surgery. You just returned from visiting her last weekend after an eight-hour ride. You weren't planning to go back for a few months. You are trying to figure out what to do about work demands and your children's schedules. Your husband is feeling frustrated and guilty. He tried to convince his mother to move to an assisted living facility a few months ago, but she wouldn't agree. Now he is overwhelmed thinking about how to arrange for help once his mother is out of the hospital.

In today's world it's common for family members to live in different cities and states. Sometimes the parents move away from the place where they raised their family, perhaps to retire to a warmer or more appealing environment. Often it is the children who scatter geographically. So, many adult children must help from a distance when their older parents and other relatives need assistance. The task can be difficult, stressful, and time consuming.

This article is designed to help. It suggests issues for family members to consider when thinking about how to get needed support…

The Forgetting
Alzheimer's: Portrait of an Epidemic
By David Shenk

Alzheimer's disease is a demographic time bomb. Since 1975, the number of Americans afflicted has risen from five hundred thousand to five million; over the next fifty years, an estimated eighty to one hundred million more people worldwide will succumb to it. But it is the story behind these numbers that makes The Forgetting such a landmark work. A magnificent synthesis of history, science, politics, psychology, and profound human drama, the book explores the nature of a disease that attacks not merely memory but the very core of our human identity.

Delving into such diverse areas as art history, literature, genetics, and neurobiology, David Shenk shows that Alzheimer's particular terror, the gradual eradication of memory and of mind is as old as humankind itself. He convincingly posits that such historical figures as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jonathan Swift and Frederick Law Olmstead were caught in the disease's insidious grip. Moving portraits of contemporary patients, their families, and their caregivers drive home the sad pattern of regression Alzheimer's exacts, a pathology that eerily mirrors child development in reverse. Yet Shenk offers a well of empathy and understanding for families striving to better understand and come to terms with their loss.

With equal mastery Shenk charts the complicated race to find a cure. As scientists pursue a treatment worth billions of dollars, the brutal competition among them poses a serious threat to the traditional ethic of sharing vital research. But there are heartening signs of progress, and for the first time there is excitement among scientists that a cure may indeed be possible.

Shenk eloquently calls Alzheimer's "death by a thousand subtractions." The Forgetting is at once a powerful examination of what this means and a forthright discussion of the impact this epidemic will have on the life of every reader...
